Which
Ceramic Tile Adhesive
to Use?

The ceramic tile adhesive you use depends on the location and use of the area you are tiling. There are also trade-offs to consider I will get to in a minute. Basically, the question is: wet or dry versus floor or wall.

Thinset is better for wet installations, around a bath tub or the floor or wall of a shower. It is stronger and more flexible than mastic so it is also recommended for floors. Thinset comes in colors, so pick one to match the color of the grout you will be using. Thinset does not come pre-mixed and must be mixed as you use it. This can present a timing problem for newbie tile setters.

Thinset adhesive comes as a powder that is mixed with latex, epoxy or water. Mixed with water it can be used on wet and dry installations but it does not create a water barrier. There are no fumes but you should wear a dusk mask.

Latex, or acrylic, is even better and stronger than water-mixed thinset. However, it still does not create a water barrier. Use a dusk mask here too. The same can be said of epoxy thinset. The advantage of epoxy is that it will work on just about any substrate. So when in doubt use epoxy.

Organic mastic is better for use in walls because it sets up faster. There is less chance of a tile falling off the wall before the adhesive is dry. It is not recommended for wet installations, however, there is mastic that is specially made for wet areas. Mastic is popular with amateur tile setters because it comes pre-mixed.

Most pros use thinset almost exclusively. It is more difficult to mix and use but it is stronger and more durable.

Also, the ceramic tile adhesive you use will depend on the substrate or underlayment. Consult your tile dealer or hardware store before making your final selection.

One final point, ceramic tile adhesive can be dangerous, especially if inhaled. Always wear gloves and use a mask or respirator. There are potential problems from both dust and vapors. A respirator may be necessary, especially when using an organic mastic. Read the adhesive's warning label carefully and follow it's directions.
