How to Layout a
Ceramic Tile Countertop

A ceramic tile countertop is easy to layout because it is small, narrow and usually square. Be sure it is flat and level, especially if you are going to tile the wall as well. Check the corners too, if they are not truly square you are in for a world of hurt. It is a nice touch to line up the grout lines of the counter tiles with the grout lines of the wall tiles, if possible.

If you are not using trim tiles, the front of the counter provides the only guide line you will need. Place full tiles near the front and have the partial tiles back by the wall or backsplash. They are less noticeable there and can sometimes be made to blend in with the backsplash.

If you are installing trim, place a guide line parallel to the front were the trim tiles will fit. The same goes for trim around a sink or stovetop. If the countertop is L-shaped or U-shaped you will need several guide lines around the edges.
