They can also be found in your own home. The key here is the three Ps: planning, practice and patience. The designs above are truly works of art but you can achieve really excellent results with less labor, and less money, with a little artistic know-how. Don't worry, you won't have to learn how to draw or become an interior decorator. A few simple tricks can make a huge difference. Note, these tricks will work just as well with natural stone tile.
Tile, by it's nature, is a set of repeating patterns. This is boring. Introducing variety of color, shape or pattern will make it much more interesting. For example, a simple grid pattern of identical tiles can be livened up by having the tiles vary in color. The secret here is to keep them the same basic color. In the example below all the tiles are basically blue but each varies just a little.

Another simple trick is to introduce tiles with a different color or shape in a regular pattern. This will break up the monotony nicely.

If you are really creative you can carry it one step further. See in this ceramic tile design how there are three basic patterns: an inner gird, a band around them of lighter tiles and finally a perimeter of diagonal tiles.

Another method is to combine two or three differently shaped tiles and repeat that pattern across the floor. See the layout design page for some examples.
