The real secret to drilling ceramic tile is care. Tile is tough and glazes far harder than you would expect but tile is very brittle. Your main concern is to avoid cracking the tile. You will need a variable speed drill, a bit especially made for ceramic tile and some masking tape. The drill is the most important part because you want to turn the bit very slowly.
Just about any hardware store will have bits that are made for drilling ceramic tile. Some people advise using regular carbide masonry bits, which are okay, but the specially made ones are much better. If the tile is expensive or old it can be very difficult to replace so it is better to be safe than sorry.
Use the masking tape to put an X over the spot were you want the hole. Drill a pilot hole first unless the hole you want to make is quite small. Hold the drill tightly so it doesn't slip and lighten up the pressure towards the end. Good luck!
