The Kitchen
Ceramic Tile Wall

A kitchen ceramic tile wall faces one challenge that is otherwise rare: heat. A kitchen stove or woodstove can give off enough heat to destroy the bond of the adhesive used to attach tile to a wall (or floor for that matter). Move adhesives are completely inappropriate for this reason. The best choice is a good thin-set adhesive that is especially made to withstand heat. They are a little more expense but you cannot avoid using them.

You will also have to check local file codes. Some localities insist on an air space between the wall and the tilework. Others will tell you to use fire-resistant material in between.

If you have to leave an air space purchase small strips of metal called hat channels. These attach to the wall with screws put into the studs. On top of the channels put two, or more, layers of backerboard using dry wall screws. Then just mount the tiles on the backerboard using heat-resistant adhesive. (Never use 2x4s, they are combustible!)
