Mosaic Ceramic Tile

Ceramic tile 2-inches square or smaller is called mosaic ceramic tile. It can be made of glass, porcelain or clay and comes in a large variety of colors. It can be square, rectangular or hexagon. Almost all are sheet-mounted.

Sheet-mounting is the key problem. Because if it's small size mosaic ceramic tile is mounted on sheets for easy handling. However, the sheets themselves get in the way of the adhesive used to hold the tile to the bed. The "sheets" may be small dots across the grout spaces between the tiles, or a plastic mesh. Sometimes, in the manufacturing process, a greasy residue is left on the backs of the tiles. This has to be cleaned off, or better yet, a different set of tile selected. If you decide to try cleaning it use a mild detergent and water, and let the tile dry completely before setting.

When setting mosaic tile do a test first. Tap a section of tile onto the prepared adhesive, then remove it and "read" the back. If the back is completely covered by the adhesive you are on your way. If not try resetting the bed with a different sized trowel. Try to get 100% coverage. Some setters say that 75% is sufficient but you run the risk of the tile breaking and coming loose over time. This is one situation where more really is better.

Sheet-mounting aside, mosaic ceramic tile is the best all-round choice you can make. It fits all installations wet or dry. Because the tile is freeze-thaw stable it can be used outdoors in a cold climate. It's tough enough for heavy duty surfaces like floors or countertops in a busy restaurant. And, the large choice of colors makes it suitable for any décor.
